Why you aren’t fluent yet.

Traditional methods force you into one of two traps. Both make your brain shut down.

🤯

Textbooks overwhelm you

50 new words dumped on you at once. Your brain can't handle it. You get frustrated and quit.

😴

Games bore you to death

Still learning 'The apple is red' after 300 days? Your brain needs a challenge. You lose interest.

Enter the 'Goldilocks Zone'

Your brain learns best when content is just right—not too hard, not too easy.

The Wall

Too many unknown words. Your brain switches from "reading" to deciphering. Frustration sets in, and acquisition stops.

90-98% — The Sweet Spot

The Flow State

This is where the magic happens. You understand the story, allowing your brain to subconsciously "guess" the 2% of new words. This is natural acquisition.

The Plateau

When every word is familiar, you aren't being challenged. It feels comfortable, but you’ve stopped growing. It's time to move to more difficult content.

Watch language become permanent.

Other apps test you. We track you. Every word you encounter fades from orange to white as you master it.

1. Discovery

New words appear in purple. One tap reveals the meaning without breaking your flow. Your brain marks this word as "active."

2. Acquisition

As you encounter the word in different stories, the highlight fades. You stop translating and start knowing.

3. Mastery

The highlight disappears. The word is now a permanent part of your mental library. You read it as effortlessly as your native language.

Why comprehensible input works.

Your brain doesn't memorize languages. It acquires them through exposure.

Based on 40 years of research

In the 1980s, linguist Stephen Krashen revolutionized language learning. His research showed that we acquire language naturally when we understand messages, not through drilling.

  • The i+1 Principle: Challenging but comprehensible.
  • The Affective Filter: Anxiety blocks acquisition.
  • Extensive Reading: Context over lists.
  • Natural Order: Grammar is absorbed naturally.

"We acquire language in only one way: when we understand messages."

— Stephen Krashen, The Input Hypothesis (1985)

Frequently Asked Questions

Most apps test you on what you don't know using translations and drills. Gummely focuses on Comprehensible Input. We give you interesting content you can actually understand. You acquire the language by using it, not by memorizing rules about it. It feels less like a classroom and more like living abroad.

For languages with different scripts (like Japanese, Korean, or Russian), we recommend spending a few days learning the basic alphabet first. However, our 'Instant Translation' feature allows you to tap any word to hear how it's pronounced and see what it means, helping you pick up reading naturally over time.

Yes! This is how you learned your first language. By exposing your brain to massive amounts of understandable content, your brain subconsciously maps the grammar and vocabulary. Speaking comes naturally as a result of this input, usually much faster than with traditional study methods.

We have you covered. The app will start you with very basic vocabulary and simple sentence structures. You can focus on reading and listening in your 'Silent Period' until you feel ready to start chatting with the AI avatars.

Absolutely. You can use voice input to chat with our AI avatars. It's the perfect low-pressure environment to practice your pronunciation and sentence construction before you try it out in the real world.

Absolutely. Our conversation feature includes specialized avatars that can simulate real-world scenarios. You can discuss travel plans with a "traveller" avatar, practice mock exams for the TOEFL with an "examiner" avatar for certificate prep, or just have a casual chat with a "new friend" avatar. It's a safe space to build confidence for any situation.

We currently offer 11 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified) and Chinese (Traditional). A single Gummely Pro subscription gives you access to all of them, and we are constantly working to add new languages to our platform.

You can delete your data directly within the Gummely app. Open the app, go to Settings, navigate to Manage Profile, and select 'Delete Data' to clear progress for a specific language, or 'Delete Account' to permanently remove your entire profile and all associated data.
