Most apps test you on what you don't know using translations and drills. Gummely focuses on Comprehensible Input. We give you interesting content you can actually understand. You acquire the language by using it, not by memorizing rules about it. It feels less like a classroom and more like living abroad.
For languages with different scripts (like Japanese, Korean, or Russian), we recommend spending a few days learning the basic alphabet first. However, our 'Instant Translation' feature allows you to tap any word to hear how it's pronounced and see what it means, helping you pick up reading naturally over time.
Yes! This is how you learned your first language. By exposing your brain to massive amounts of understandable content, your brain subconsciously maps the grammar and vocabulary. Speaking comes naturally as a result of this input, usually much faster than with traditional study methods.
The app works better if you already know a few hundred words so the 90-98% comprehensible input can be generated. For absolute beginners the content will be near 0% comprehensible at first. The app will start you with very basic vocabulary and simple sentence structures. If you are comfortable with a larger comprehension gap you can focus on reading and listening in your 'Silent Period' until you feel ready to start chatting with the avatars.

Absolutely. Our conversation feature includes specialized avatars that can simulate real-world scenarios. You can discuss travel plans with a "traveller" avatar, practice mock exams for the TOEFL with an "examiner" avatar for certificate prep, or just have a casual chat with a "new friend" avatar. It's a safe space to build confidence for any situation.
We currently offer 11 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified) and Chinese (Traditional). A single Gummely Pro subscription gives you access to all of them, and we are constantly working to add new languages to our platform.
You can delete your data directly within the Gummely app. Open the app, go to Settings, navigate to Manage Profile, and select 'Delete Data' to clear progress for a specific language, or 'Delete Account' to permanently remove your entire profile and all associated data.
